families with young adults who have aged out of the system and seek resources that allow them
to be valuable and participating community members. With 2016 grant support from OCAC, we
were able to continue a major partnership with the Autism community, showcasing the work of
Orange County Autism Society member Mary Berridge, award winning photographer and parent
of a child with Autism. We were recognized by Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger who
celebrated FRANK gallery as an outstanding contributor to building alliances within the
community. We intend to serve as a resource that provides opportunities that support our
mission of inclusivity and diversity, and will continue our partnerships in 2017 for April Autism
Awareness and "Diverseabilities."Through hosting exhibitions and community forums at our
gallery, we hope to be a resouce for our current partnerships with the Art Therapy Institute,
Project STIR (Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility), Carolina Institute for
Developmental Disabilites, The Autism Society of North Carolina, and the Chapel Hill Parks and
Recreation's Adapted Recreation and Inclusion Program, The Autism Society, UNC-Chapel Hill.
Focus on Photography and the 5rd Annual Triangle Photo Consortium
In 2017, we hope to supplement our efforts with a major photography exhibition and speaker
working closely with our local partners in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough. Grant support
would enable an Orange County show card, an honorarium for a speaker, exhibition support for
a community show in our outreach gallery, and partnership support for the CLICK! initiative.
With past grant support from OCAC, FRANK members created the FRANK:inFocus
Triangle Photo Consortium, with a focus on Orange County. Last year, the festival broadened its
base across the Triangle and was awarded a project of the Southern Documentary Fund as its
fiscal sponsor. The overall festival is now known as CLICK! Triangle Photo Festival at
www.clicktriangle_photo.org. FRANK continues to play a significant role in the overall festival
(FRANK Outreach volunteer coordinator, Barbara Tyroler remains coordinator of
FRANK:inFocus photo festival and serves as Orange County representative for CLICK!). As a
participant, rather than the organizing force, FRANK gallery is focusing on creating exciting
programs for the Orange County community including workshops, speakers, and exhibitions.
Historically, FRANK:inFocus, our first annual 2012 fall photo festival, brought together
over 15 salons, lectures, and exhibition venues throughout the County and the Triangle with
over$10,000 combined in-kind and cash support. In 2013, with seed funding from OCAC, we
doubled that with in-kind support from museums, universities, art centers, and galleries and
created the North Carolina Museum of Art Photography Consortium. Funds from the OCAC
grant supported our featured photography exhibition and showcased the work of FRANK artists
and photographers with panel discussions on lens-based art at the Ackland Museum. Our
community partners co-hosted salons during the Triangle wide NCMA Photography Consortium
that FRANK pioneered.
Our gallery produced the centerpiece exhibition, FRANK:inFocus; Inspired by the Lens in
September 2014 with 22 active partners, nearly 40 events, and an estimated audience of 2000.
In 2015, we expanded our programs with Triangle universities, photo programs, galleries, and
museums. Melinda Head, the President of Head Solutions Group http://headsolutionsgroup.com,
generously offered her company's expertise to take the festival to the next level. We
coordinated administrative duties with Frank Konhaus, an art collector and director of an artist-
in-residency program called Cassihaus and built relationships with Ackland Art Museum, UNC
Art Department, Light+Design Gallery, Framers Corner, Daylight Magazine and Gallery in
Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and Carrboro; North Carolina Museum of Art, Contemporary Art
Museum, and Flanders Gallery in Raleigh; Durahm Art Guild, Through This Lens Gallery, and
Nasher Museum in Durham.
The 2017 FRANK:inFocus festival will recognize 3 North Carolina women photographers
in the FRANK retail gallery and showcase the work of local photography students from UNC and
Duke in our community gallery. FRANK photographers will volunteer educational workshops
with the Ackland and Kidzu Childrens museums. We attribute the sustainability of this
photography program to seed funding support from OCAC, Downtown Partnerships, and Arts
and Innovation grants, and foresee its future to be a continued and more comprehensive
consortium bringing together a diverse population of lens-based artists in Orange County and
the Triangle with exhibitions, workshops, art salons, seminars, and discussion forums. Now as a
component of the CLICK!Triangle photo festival, we see our role as a part of a larger
partnership, highlighting the photographers and educators of our county.
