Organizational Profile
FRANK, an artists' collective gallery operating as a 501(c)(3) organization, has affected
thousands of community members through its outreach programs. Since opening 6 years ago,
the Gallery has presented both the visual and performing arts in its space on E. Franklin St.,
Chapel Hill, at no cost to the public. In addition to serving the community as an arts venue, the
Gallery has partnered with many local arts and community organizations on projects that
particularly benefit the Chapel Hill /Carrboro Community.
The Gallery's mission is to support the arts community of Chapel Hill and the region, strengthen
community appreciation of the arts through educational outreach and promote the Town of
Chapel Hill and North Carolina as a major Arts destination.
The Franklin Street gallery was established in 2010 with 20 artist members who conceived,
developed, and now operate FRANK. The town of Chapel Hill, the Downtown Partnership, local
businesses, and individuals provided initial funding to launch FRANK. The gallery showcases
contemporary art by more than 200 established local and regional artists, attracting more than
15,000 people a year to the Gallery and downtown Chapel Hill.
Current Programs and Services
Art education is a priority at FRANK. Members tailor programs to serve all of the community but
specifically the needs and interests of young children, teenagers and individuals in health care
institutions.
For young children: Member artists work with Kidzu, a Chapel Hill interactive children's
museum, to bring programs to youngsters up to age 8 at both Kidzu and FRANK locations.
FRANK artists and volunteers also hold weekly art and photography classes, facilitated by Rev.
Campbell, at the Rogers Road Community Center for underserved children in the area.
For teens: FRANK artists work with youth groups to create wall hangings, photography and
other art forms to be displayed on FRANK's Community Wall. This year the Karen Youth Art
Group produced a bilingual children's book, "Transplanting Traditions, The Story of a
Community Farm," a copy of which is enclosed. The book was written and illustrated by young
Karen refugees supported by FRANK artists and volunteers, including a professional
photographer, a children's book author and a book designer. The book is being distributed to all
Chapel Hill/Carrboro schools, all local public libraries, Orange Literacy and the participating
Karen families.
The annual "Rubbish to Runway," a fashion show, is the culmination of a design competition for
teens that focuses on the importance of recycling. The teens are required to fashion recycled
materials into clothing that can be worn. Fashion designer Alexander Julian leads the judges'
panel while friends of the designers model the frocks. The works are also on exhibition at the
gallery to call attention to the contestants' imagination and craftsmanship in reusing everything
from packing peanuts to bicycle tires and road maps.
For health care patients: The Community Art Wall at FRANK also hosts work from patients at
the psychiatric, oncology and hematology units of UNC Health Care System as well as those in
the pediatric ward at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Every December FRANK
collects donated art supplies for the cancer patients' use while they recover.
For the community: FRANK provides a venue for a broad range of local artists to present their
work to the community at no charge to the artists or their appreciative audiences. Programs
have included: Deep Dish Theater, Mallarme Chamber Players and KidZNotes. In addition, area
artists have demonstrated pottery techniques, black-and-white and infrared photography,
encaustic painting, eco-farming, dance, bookmaking as art, wallpaper and tile design and
drawing. Adult journaling classes are held quarterly in various Triangle Land Conservancy and
Orange County outdoor environments.
