The state Department of Transportation now thinks more about the
environment when it builds roads.New rules require better control of
pollution from livestock operations. And in 1988, North Carolina
lawmakers banned phosphates in detergents — eliminating a major
source of nutrients in wastewater.
• To ensure that this progress continues,consensus is needed on how
best to protect and manage the estuary's valuable resources.The APES •
Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan, a common
sense guide for environmental stewardship in the Albemarle-Pamlico ;.;::.
region,provides the necessary tools for continued management,coor-
dination and cooperation.
The CCMP addresses three main environmental concerns—water
quality, vital habitats and fisheries — as well as the need for public
education and involvement. It also provides a framework for imple-
menting its goals.During the planning process,the document evolved
from a series of disconnected recommendations to a well-coordinated
management approach. As a result of public involvement,the CCMP
now addresses concerns about how environmental P rotection will
affect economic growth.
While the scope of the APES study did not extend beyond the region,
many of the initiatives outlined in this plan may be appropriate for use
in other parts of the state.These strategies are believed to be the most
effective,
the most
feasible and the most immediately necessary to
protect the health of the Albemarle-Pamlico estuarine to
P system. ...... .... .....
.:::. ........ ..... .::::::.
WHAT DOES THE APES CCMP PROPOSE?
The plan proposes objectives
and management actions desi gn ed to
accomplish the following goals:
:> ::<>:Restore naxntaut::.or;enhance:<.water..:;, uah ..an he :;::;:. >::;.;:: •.
::< Ibeaaarle.-P rni1ieo re :on so: that;:it as fit for fish ....:
wil :::ands
.............. ..
::S Conserve anti protect vital fish and wildlife habitats,
her
4ii. iskrici:ci:i;;:±;<' c%isy^y;i?i%iSi'i>asi ':::i:; ti;:is is isi: :;>r:::::asi:::;';2:::Si=:;isSi;?2isSa :i':;::::`: :: :i:i;?i:z:isc::i:2:i:i:a ::.:.. :;::i•: :_;y;:::.
amtauir fisherses and provide fox fherr
long-teen,sustainable t se,both commercial and rec
..:......;: rea 'an
• Promote...res .onsible
stewardslu o€;fe:;nafural re- ..
