Triangle J Council of Governments <br /> Economic Development Report to Local Governments <br /> Summary of 1992/93 Accomplishments <br /> September, 1993 <br /> I. Activities to Internationalize the Region's Economy <br /> 1. Supported the Research Triangle World Trade Center as corporate secretary and <br /> executive board member lobbied legislature for educational program funds (in Gov. <br /> Hunt's budget), and capital funds. Assisted in obtaining other public support, served <br /> on nominating committee, scheduled Annual Board meeting. <br /> 2. Maintained world trade contacts via the North Carolina World Trade Center,re- <br /> elected State Board Secretary. Advisor for the State NCWTA Annual Conference. <br /> NCWTA received the 1992 Presidential "EXPORT'Award at the Annual Conference <br /> in Charlotte,May 12. <br /> 3. Serve as the grantee for Foreign Trade Zone #93; numerous presentations,recruited <br /> new Board members, attended FTZ training at National Association of Foreign Trade <br /> Zones. Prepared FTZ annual report. Continuing the negotiations with a potential <br /> operator,with the airport and with a transport company for a secondary site for a <br /> distribution/warehousing capacity. The goal is to activate a full service general <br /> purpose Foreign Trade Zone as indicated in the NON-TRANSFERABLE grant from the <br /> US Government. <br /> 4. Obtained activation of Subzone 93 A, Mallinckrodt Medical and 93 B, IBM. Working <br /> now with an applicant and US Customs to develop a new Subzone 93 C. There is a <br /> $10,000 application fee paid to the COG for each Subzone and $10,000 due annually. <br /> II. Strategic Economic Planning and Cooperation <br /> 1. Used the Economic Strategies Committee and the Partnership for Leadership (CEO <br /> Group) meetings to bring many key leaders together to promote a "regional voice," <br /> i <br /> d scuss the World Class Region Conference and other important issues. Congressman <br /> essman <br /> Price addressed the CEO and Economic Strategies committee leaders on the current <br /> state of affairs in DC relevant to the Triangle. <br /> 2. Helped prepare for the WORLD CLASS REGION II Conference. Prepared several <br /> drafts of the economic competitiveness paper and participated on the discussions of that <br /> group as well as the Steering Committee and the Leadership Council group. Developed <br /> several key contacts in State Government, etc. for post conference venture work. Served <br /> with the Leadership Task Force and related work groups. Recruited to participate in an <br /> effort to gain federal funds and programs for high-tech, experimental projects in the <br /> Triangle. i` <br />
