050 - - - -- -- -
e. PUBLIC HOUSING IMPROVEMENTS
Included in the Attachment Section is a copy of the Chapel
Hill Housing Department' s Five - Year Comprehensive Improvements
Assistance Program Summary.
f. PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENT INITIATIVES
The Town of Chapel Hill, Department of Housing and Community
Development will continue to work with the Resident Management
Corporation, Airport Gardens, to study the feasibility of selling
the Airport Gardens apartments to public housing residents.
Three of the public housing neighborhoods applied to HUD for
a Resident Management technical assistance grant to provide
training and assistance with the certification Resident Management
Corporations. The leaders of the seven resident associations with
elected officers comprise the Resident Management technical
assistance grant to provide training and assistance with the
certification Resident Management Corporations.
The leaders of the seven resident associations with elected
officers comprise the Residents ' Council. The Council meets bi-
monthly at the Department of Housing and Community Development.
The following topics, among others, have appeared on their agendas:
forming a community watch (DARE officers) , organizing an anti-crime
march, the Drug Elimination Grant proposal and the Public Housing
Residents Empowerment Project.
Trinity Court and Airport Gardens are the only associations
with meeting sites available to them on their property so they have
significantly more activities than the other associations . Other
associations, however, still benefit from local agencies who bring
their programs to the public housing communities - agencies
including Cooperative Extension' s nutrition program and Planned
Parenthood' s Minority Involvement Project.
41
