The major goal of the program
was to increase student retention of content and skills knowledge and assist in the closing
the achievement gap. The tentative dates of the program are June 19 through July 28,
2017.
The program will be held at the Cedar Grove Community Center. We have
developed a similar program in the summer, immediately following the grand opening.
The Center provided a five week program in 2016 from June 20 through July 21, 2016.
The program included both male and female students in the elementary, middle school
and high school. The center served 54 students with the highest enrollment for any given
day of twenty-five students and the lowest student enrollment of seven. Enrollment was
impacted by parent prearranged vacations and the Fourth of July Holiday. Participation in
the closing activities included a Magician Presentation and a trip to Sports Plex.
The program included a majority of African American students with interracial
students and three Caucasian students. Students range in age from 6 to 18. The
geographical area of Cedar Grove is very limited in activities and opportunities to
experience cultural activities and diversity. This grant will provide funding to travel and
experience the arts and cultural activities in group setting. The musical component will
increase creativity and expression. Trips will increase awareness and appreciation for the
Arts. An artist has not been selected to lead this wonderful opportunity. The vision is to
bring a Drummer as a resident instructor to explore music, create art projects with an Art
instructor, and develop a Community Choir. I have attached my vita and I have an
abundance of experience with teaching, training teachers and providing leadership as an
Adjunct Professor. The past six months has allowed us to grow and expand on wings. We
trust you will allow the vision to expand.
2
