After researching and writing about <br /> their destinations,students created detailed fabric collages. To launch the Carolina <br /> project, Missy Julian Fox and Elaine O'Neil,author and illustrator of the children's book <br /> `Road Trip Carolina' came to share their book and speak about the creative process.After <br /> developing paragraphs in their classrooms,4th graders translated their descriptive <br /> destination paragraphs into detailed fabric illustrations capturing the essence of each <br /> place.The Carolina project ended in a showcase of writings and artworks. Ms. Fox and Ms. <br /> O'Neil came to celebrate with us! <br /> Northside Timeline Project: Social Studies and Art Integration <br /> In 2016, 5th graders created and installed a permanent ceramic tile timeline at Northside <br /> Elementary. Before beginning the Northside Timeline Project 5th grade classes <br /> collaborated with Northside Alumni and the Jackson Center to gain an understanding of our <br /> community's history,including the civil rights movement and integration. In art class, each <br /> student designed and made a decorative tile depicting symbols that represent Northside's <br /> rich history.The personal narratives from the Alumni influenced the final tile designs. As a <br /> result, each tile within the timeline helps to connect the past with the present. Our admin, <br /> Coretta Sharpless and Michael Brown, along with other teachers contributed tiles to the <br /> timeline,as well. <br /> Paintbrush: Public Art Installation <br /> In 2014, 5th graders collaborated with local mural painter Michael Brown to design a <br /> public work of art for Shortbread Loft,a new apartment building on the edge of our <br /> Northside Community. Throughout this public art project,students participated in a <br /> rigorous design process and learned about the influence and value that art can have within <br /> a community. <br />
