Project
Playscape,is a STEAM project challenging students to integrate science, technology,
engineering, art and math to design kid-friendly play structures with innovative design.
There are four stages in Project Playscape: a workshop, idea generating, building a
prototype model, and a critique. Shaan Hassan (a local architect in Chapel Hill) and Rachel
Cotter(a local landscape designer) will facilitate a one day design workshop for 3rd grade
students at Northside Elementary, introducing them to the design process that professional
designers use to develop an idea. The next week, students will divide themselves into
collaborative groups to write and sketch out multiple ideas for their playscape designs.
Each team will be given constrains such as area measurements and the need to include
kinetics. Groups will determine the age group and design play structures appropriate for
that group. After accumulating a portfolio of ideas, collaborative groups will use a range of
materials to build their models. Classes will offer feedback and critique to the playscape
designs as a reflection of process and outcome. Mr. Hassan and Ms.Cotter will be invited
back to participate in the critiques.
Project Costs:
Item: Quantity: Total Cost: Supplier:
Visiting Designers 2 ($50 each) $100
Recycled Building Materials: 2 bags $50 The Scrap
Wood scraps,plastic pieces,netting, Exchange
tagboard,dowels
Adhesives:hot glue sticks,tape,brads, Hot Glue,2pks(@$10.45) $65.35 Walmart
toothpicks Tape,4 rolls(@$6.70)
Brads,3pks(@$5.11)
Toothpicks,1pk(@$2.32)
Project cost before tax $215.27
Taxes(7.5%) (without visiting designer $8.64
payment)
Total Project Cost $223.91
Total Amount Requested: $112, to be matched by Northside PTA
