It has been
determined that some improvements are desirable in each district in
order that they may efficiently serve targeted development and the
surrounding community transportation needs. Also, these districts
will serve as "entrance-ways" and the recommended improvements will
enhance both the scenic and functional capacities of the roadways.
I-85/Buckhorn Road Economic Development District
1) Buckhorn Road from I-85 project terminus to US 70 - widening
improvements to same standards as I-85 portion of project (24 '
pavement on 120 ' right-of-way) which would provide for easy
installation of future turn lanes, grade improvements at Southern i
Railroad Crossing, intersection improvements including turn lanes
and improved turn radii for easier and safer truck turn movements
at US70 .
Old NC 86/I-40 Economic Development District
1) Old NC 86 - widen to a four lane divided facility from I-40 to
1-85 . Recommended cross-section would be four 12 ' travel lanes
with a landscaped median. Access should be limited with additional
controls placed on median openings. Bicycle facilities (4 ' paved
shoulders and signage) should also be incorporated with this
project as recommended in the Draft Regional Bicycle Plan.
