The watersheds of Back Creek, U ii l
pe7 Frio, Little
River', i hie vecr and :Sot co together cover
almost 92% of"-the`Towns hip'`s total area
Two impoundments on the Eno River downstream of the Township,
Lake Ben Johnson and Corporation Lake, are the primary sources of
water for the Town of Hillsborough and the Orange-Alamance Water
System (OAWS serves Efland and portions of Mebane and Alamance
County) , respectively. Upstream of those two impoundments, in
Cedar Grove Township, is County-owned Lake Orange. L400rge is
an augmentation reservoir from which water can be released..during
low flow periods to increase availability of water to downstream
users.::; le lJ : ark #< ,>::... :..:. . . :;.;:...;
:•:.i::.;•i:•>:.i:.pro c s.::.>.::<€>W t::<::: `ork:: of::::the<::: o .:reservoir .. ..
' : : ::;+::5;:,:. ..;::i.:i:; ... :..': i....,. .;:..: .>: :..:.,.;::::i :•:.;:;.::::s ii x,::`:: :: :j: :i:;v. ;.;:;.::;::;>:;}}:: :::r;:<::xc<n•,:•:;•_:
The headwaters of the North and South Forks of the Little River
originate' in the eastern third of the township and flow into
MDurham
'{.:;:s.. `L a it tv.;:R l:e•r:a:vrRiver
.'...';.:{;::.....:.:•:..w v.v:. v•.•;.:-iia.i.p^,:aC:.:#'Dd;>:u iv :iitFn'.:;:,::>yya i :.}:r<n
i<; . :.i^;:..
.!
:::portion 4 ; atrI : fNa t , : o: ester:u ^ ?i v :e
The western third of the Township gives rise to Back Creek, which
flows into the Back Creek Reservoir, a source ghowdatteorNxfGorahr4 and Mebane. Water system interconnections and
contractual agreements additionally create the potential for
water from these reservoirs to serve Orange County residents.
Floodplain: The majority of the Township's 100-year floodplain
lies adjacent to five waterways; the North Fork and South Fork of
the Little River, the East Fork and West Fork of the Eno River,
and Back Creek. Because the headwaters of these streams lie in
the Township, the stream valleys are relatively narrow and the
extent of flooding during a 100 year flood is not great. Along
Back Creek and the two forks of the Eno River the floodplain
rarely exceeds 500 feet from the center of the stream and up to
800 feet along the two forks of the Little River. Floodplain
covers approximately 8 .5% of the Township, some 4 ,430 acres .
4
