The meeting resulted with some very positive, concrete decisions, discussions, actions and observa-
tions that included:
1) Our proposed boundaries of the Midway area to be the focus of economic development efforts
(business district)was adopted with suggested modifications. The specific boundary(see
attached map)include east-railroad tracks in Carrboro; north-Main and Rosemary streets;
south-Brewer Lane and W. Franklin Street; and, west-Mitchell Lane.
2) A survey(attached)was distributed to basically ascertain the needs of the area. Our
preliminary findings indicate a great concern for crime in the area. It may well behoove all of
us if the Town of Chapel Hill considers placing a police sub-station in the Midway vicinity.
Other prevalent desires/needs included parking, more community activities and job training.
3) MDC's efforts were worthwhile and needed, and could not be completed by volunteers only.
4) A concerted and committed effort from the various entities of the community was a must.
5) MDC must establish a paid administrative staff to work out tasks as assigned by the board of
directors and maintain office information.
6) The three local governments have played a crucial role They must continue, increasing their
resources and support.
While great strides have been accomplished, our extensive process of community involvement also
_ revealed:
1) MDC must increase its membership to included active committed members, or "pillars," of
the community.
2) The pursuit of projects and programs by MDC is imminent and a strategic plan of action
should be immediately developed for implementation.
3) More permanent and stable sources of funding are necessary and paramount to augment local
financial investments.
4) The banking community must and should take a more active role.
5) MDC must reach more to the effective residents of the Midway community, perhaps through a
community paper. ._
6) The internal structure of MDC must be more developed and secured. 501(c)(3)tax exemption
status must be acquired.
7) A permanent Board of Directors needs to be put in place.
8) The need for both municipalities of Carrboro and Chapel Hill to make a more concerted effort
to work beyond city boundaries that effect the Midway area.
2
