DocuSign Envelope ID:0E33E5E7-2F9B-4F3C-9COD-95D21AC52620
We are seeking the Arts in Education Grant for Fall 2016 in order to bring Billy Jonas to
our stage for two performances, and to our MakerSpace for four fourth-grade workshops
in March 2017. The workshops would tie directly into the fourth grade science unit on the
science of sound, allowing the children to make their own homemade instruments with
Billy Jonas as their facilitator. Without Arts Commission funding, we will be financially
obliged to forego the workshops. Billy Jonas is a singer-songwriter based in Asheville,
NC. He describes his music as "neo-tribal hootenanny"—voice and percussion-based
songs with lots of audience participation. He uses both conventional instruments (guitar,
bass, marimba), and homemade creations (buckets and barrels, keys and cans, bells and
body percussion). His emphasis on homemade, recycled instruments makes him a perfect
resident artist for our MakerSpace. For the residency we are proposing, all of our
students would experience the fun of Mr.Jonas's performance on the stage, and our older
students would also get to work with him more intensively using the materials in the
MakerSpace.
