DocuSign Envelope ID 8359632A-C43D-4832-B2EC-ED419B356126
To: Orange County Arts Council
Attn: Martha Shannon
From: Sally Greene
Date: May 24, 2016
I am writing in support of Cater Hubbard's culturally engaging project,Floraffiti.I
watched the growth and community response to the first iteration of Floraffiti,in
downtown Chapel Hill,as the words seemingly grew out of nowhere to the delight of
downtown visitors, residents, and those who do business downtown. I'm familiar
with other projects exemplifying Carter's creativity and devotion to the vibrancy of
Chapel Hill:for example,I participated in one of her projects,an interactive window
display in the form of a scavenger hunt in the Windows on Chapel Hill Program,a
program of the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership.
As the Town Council liaison to the Public Arts Commission,I am proud to say that at
last night's Council meeting,we adopted the recommended Cultural Arts plan for
the town.A long time in the making, this exciting plan now becomes part of the
larger comprehensive plan of the town,Chapel Hill 2020. Carter's new Floraffiti
proposal furthers the goals of the Cultural Arts plan in exciting ways, particularly as
it promises to involve spoken word artistry through a youth project with
Boomerang.
Boomerang is a cause that is dear to my heart: in providing alternatives to
suspension for youth in the critical middle-and high school years,it has, perhaps
literally,a life-saving role in our community.To bring such a joyful,creative and
uplifting project to the participants of Boomerang is exactly the kind of cultural
engagement that the Council is interested in promoting, and that I personally
believe is critical for the civic health of our community.
The performance aspect of the project that is connected to a Second Friday Art Walk
is a brilliant way to have the project further additional worthy arts-related goals,
including furthering the energy on our downtown streets with good night life, which
in turn supports local businesses by contributing to our offerings for cultural
tourism. All of these ends are goals clearly identified in Chapel Hill 2020.
And I believe that the project, for all of the reasons above,is worthy of arts funding
through Orange County as well The County has an interest in the civic well-being of
all its citizens,as well as an interest in supporting and strengthening the presence of
the cultural arts, with its associated economic benefits,in downtown Chapel Hill.
I encourage you to support Floraffiti with a grant to allow Carter Hubbard's magic to
shine in new ways.
