This grant will support <br /> the costs of presenting full-orchestra music education concerts for elementary students from the <br /> Orange County Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools;the Symphony presents seven music <br /> is <br /> education concerts for students in these two school districts in Spring 2017. <br /> 1. Organizational Profile <br /> Founded in 1932,the North Carolina Symphony is a full-time, 66-member orchestra. Its mission as <br /> North Carolina's state orchestra is to achieve the highest level of artistic quality and performance <br /> standards while embracing its dual legacies of statewide service and music education. <br /> Under the leadership of music director Grant Llewellyn the orchestra has continued to increase both its <br /> artistic stature and service to the community.Traveling approximately 18,000 miles each year across the <br /> state,the Symphony reaches 250,000 people per year from more than 30 counties, including over <br /> 60,000 school children. <br /> The orchestra also has an extensive music education program which is integrated into the arts education <br /> curriculum of the North Carolina public schools. The North Carolina Symphony allocates more of its <br /> resources to music education than any other professional U.S. orchestra. it <br /> 2. Current Programs and Services <br /> Evening and Community Concerts—The Symphony's season is comprised of diverse series and <br /> performances including its classical music series, pops series, pub series,a series of concerts designed <br /> specifically for young people and families, and an outdoor summer concert series. In addition to <br /> performing in downtown Raleigh's Meymandi Concert Hall,the orchestra's home venue,the Symphony <br /> offers subscription series in the following communities across the state: Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, New <br /> Bern, Southern Pines, and Wilmington. In Chapel Hill the Symphony performs nine classical concerts <br /> annually reaching an audience of over 10,000 patrons, plus a free annual outdoor summer concert in <br /> Southern Village reaching over 2,500. <br /> Education—Education concerts performed by the full-orchestra have been a central part of the North <br /> Carolina Symphony's mission since the program began over 70 years ago.The concerts are designed to <br /> introduce young people to orchestral music in a fun and engaging way and supplement the arts <br /> education curriculum in the schools. <br /> The Symphony presents numerous other educational opportunities, including professional development <br /> workshops for teachers both in Raleigh and Sampson County,a pre-concert lecture series (also <br /> presented before each classical concert in Chapel Hill), master classes with guest artists, a youth <br /> concerto competition, and free private music lessons for economically disadvantaged students.The <br /> North Carolina Symphony recognizes the profound impact music has on people's lives and believes its <br /> education programs provide a critical service to our community. <br /> 1 <br />
