Phillips is a <br /> neighborhood school, with many students from the surrounding homes walking or riding <br /> bikes to school. The enrollment at Phillips is 651 children, serving 6th to 8th grade <br /> students. The school offers the core curriculum classes with students in each grade <br /> having two electives per semester. A sample of these electives includes foreign <br /> languages such as Spanish, French, Latin and this year Advanced Mandarin; Exploring <br /> Life Skills; Exploring Family and Consumer Sciences; Video Production; Ceramics and <br /> Sculpture; Visual Arts; Band and Orchestra. The school also offers programs in <br /> Exceptional Education, Gifted Education and English as a Second Language. <br /> Phillips has a diverse racial composition: White (51%), Asian (19%), Black (12%), <br /> Hispanic (10%), Multi-Racial (7%) and American Indian/Alaskan Native (<1%) <br /> School Arts Programs <br /> The PTSA Cultural Enrichment Committee promotes the cultural arts in education by <br /> bringing a variety of professional artists to perform at our school. During the 2015-2016 <br /> school year, the students enjoyed the following performances: <br /> Minas: Brazilian Adventure, 6th 7th and 8th graders. This duo, comprised of two UNC <br /> School of the Arts graduates, performed an interactive show about the culture and <br /> music of Brazil. Their performance included guitars, percussion and vocals. Students <br /> participated through learning words and singing songs in Portuguese, playing samba <br /> drums and a Q&A session. <br /> www.minasmusic.com <br /> The Beast: Sankofa, 8th graders. Led by Professor Pierce Freelon, hip-hop and jazz <br /> quartet The Beast told the history of African American music through an interactive <br /> performance that included original songs as well as standards from the spiritual, blues, <br /> jazz and hip-hop cannon. The Beast introduced students to a revolutionary new style of <br /> music while playing homage to the musicians who came before them. <br /> www.thebeastmusic.corn <br /> NC Opera: Where Have I Heard That Before? 6th, 7th graders. Singers from the North <br /> Carolina Opera performed an interactive show that illustrated how opera permeates <br /> contemporary music. Traditional American weddings, radio advertisements and even <br /> Bugs Bunny cartoons borrow some of their most recognizable tunes from opera. <br /> www.ncopera.org <br />
