These
performances include:
ii
Friday, Feb. 17: NC Youth Tap Ensemble (6th, 7th and 8th graders): $825. Attendance
population approximately 651 students.
Fall 2017 (date TBD): The Beast: Sankofa (8th graders): $1,250. Attendance
population approximately 226 students.
All single-grade performances will take place in the auditorium at the school during the
regular school day, to best utilize the students' time and the committee's budget.
All-grade performances take place in the gymnasium.
The dancers of the NCYTE engage students with a dynamic, educational and inspiring
program featuring rhythmic dance from a variety of genres as well as some drumming
and singing. NCYTE performances include brief stories about the history of tap dance
and information about a variety of styles of rhythmic dance. It is powerful for students to
see kids their own age, and even Phillips alumni, performing on stage. The attendees
represent the cultural diversity of the school with an approximate 51% to 49% male to
female ratio.
www.ncyte.org/media/video
Fall 2017: The Beast: Sankofa will perform its show in the fall for eighth graders. We
had the Beast perform in 2015 and 2016 and the show is one of the best performances
the school has hosted. Led by Professor Pierce Freelon, hip-hop and jazz quartet The
Beast weaves the story of African American music into an interactive performance. The
students respond incredibly to Freelon and he imparts a powerful message of respect,
integrity. The attendees represent the cultural diversity of the school with an
approximate 51% to 49% male to female ratio.
ft://www.thebeaftusic.corn!
There are videos embedded under"Education."
