John Link 5
Page 2
February 23, 1993
conclusion by the Environmental Protection Agency that
passive tobacco smoke is a human lung carcinogen, as well as,
news articles which suggest employers may be susceptible to
lawsuits from employees regarding the affects of passive
smoke.
As a result of this information, the consensus and
recommendations of the committee are to: rescind the
existing county smoking policy and establish a new policy
banning smoking in all county buildings; and provide
employees with the attached pamphlet from the American Cancer
Society which explains the risks of secondary smoke.
Others issues such as: smoking in county vehicles,
smoking outside of county buildings; personnel policy and
ramifications for employees deciding not to follow the ban,
employee smoking cessation programs; and beginning date for
the smoking ban are a few concerns that were not discussed in
detail but should be considered by County Management.
