- OCIM coordinated a food bank for the victims. <br /> - Al -`cash contributions were referred to either OCIM or <br /> the-Orange County Red Cross. <br /> Because this disaster occurred during the holiday <br /> season (three days prior to Thanksgiving) , several <br /> additional activities were implemented: <br /> - The American Red Cross and OCIM coordinated the <br /> preparation of a Thanksgiving meal for those persons <br /> affected by the tornado; and <br /> - Mebane Chapel United Holy Church coordinated the <br /> collection of donations and disbursement of toys and <br /> gifts for these families. <br /> To ensure that citizens were apprised of the available <br /> services, the following processes were implemented: <br /> - a 24-hour Victims' Assistance Hotline was <br /> established. Regardless of the needs, any victim <br /> of the tornado was encouraged to call this number <br /> to request assistance or information pertaining to <br /> the relief efforts. The hotline was staffed by the <br /> Emergency Management Services Department. <br /> - Information Sheets outlining the assistance efforts <br /> were hand-delivered to all residents affected by <br /> the tornado (see Appendix A) . The community <br /> outreach effort to contact all families was <br /> coordinated by Joint Orange-Chatham Community <br /> Action (JOCCA) . <br /> A multitude of persons called to offer assistance or <br /> presented themselves at the scene to volunteer. <br /> - The coordination of volunteer efforts for services <br /> was handled by the Volunteer Center of Orange <br /> County and the Salvation Army. <br /> - The coordination of volunteers for debris clean-up <br /> and removal was handled by the Orange County <br /> Emergency Management Services Department. <br /> IV.
