ORANGE COUNTY NOVEMBER 1992 TORNADO
REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
INTRODUCTION
In November 1992, Orange County was subjected to one of
nature' s most devastating occurrences, a tornado. This
tornado resulted in two fatalities and caused extensive
damage to numerous homes and businesses in portions of
Hillsborough.
Although natural disasters are inevitable and sporadic,
the County makes every effort to be prepared and respond
accordingly. In the event of such an occurrence, the
County' s mission is to assist residents with their
immediate and long-term needs in an effort to return
them to a sense of normalcy and status prior to the
disaster.
Orange County has one of the most coordinated networks
of experienced human services agencies in the state.
These agencies include County departments, as well as
private non-profit organizations. Together, these
agencies worked cooperatively with a multitude of
volunteers to meet the needs of those persons affected
by the tornado.
Although the tornado was a tragedy, it has also served
as a learning experience for the County. Members of the
"Unmet Needs Committee" , a group of public and private
sector organizations responsible for the coordination of
relief efforts, were surveyed to identify and evaluate
their participation in this process. This report serves
as a summary of the recovery process.
1
