operations of the Tornado Relief Distribution
Center.
6 Chamber also:
- co-sponsored Victims ' Rights Workshops, in
conjunction with Northside Legal Services;
- organized restaurants to provide lunches for the
volunteers;
- developed resource lists;
- assisted and delivered victims to motels; and
- assisted victims in the referral process.
The Chamber, as an organization, received no money
or donations of supplies - rather directed such
contributions to various churches and collection
points.
J. Distribution Center
The Distribution Center was located at the old A&P
Grocery Store, North Hills Shopping Center, at the
intersection of HWYS 86N & 70E. It was operational
from November 28, 1992 - January 30, 1993 under the
direction of James Russell, a local entrepreneur.
The Center was used as a warehouse for the
collection, storage and distribution of clothing,
furniture, appliances, and household items. (A
food pantry was also initiated - but discontinued
in order to centralize efforts with OCIM. ) Two
paid temporary employees were hired to make truck
pick-ups and deliveries. The overwhelming response
by area communities filled the 15,000 square foot
building. An estimate of the donations include:
- 50 living room sofa and chair sets;
- 25 bedroom sets and frames;
- 6 dining room or dinette sets;
- 40 box spring/mattress sets;
- various chest of drawers;
- book cases;
- chairs;
- electric ranges;
- refrigerators;
- washer/dryers;
- water heaters;
- household items;
- bedding (blankets & sheets)
13
