E. Orange County Public Works Department .
The Orange County Public Works Department provided
direction and coordination for the clean-up
efforts . This included the identification and
assessment of needs, collection and disposal of
building debris, wood debris, and miscellaneous
debris. To implement these activities, the
department provided loaders, dozers, knuckle boom
trucks, chain saws, various hand tools, fuel, and
motorpool repair.
The staff hours, vehicle usage and equipment used
towards the debris clean-up and removal efforts
resulted in costs of approximately $22, 000.
Through the efforts of the Orange County Public
Works Department and volunteers from surrounding
municipalities and agencies, approximately 3,542
tons of debris was collected and transported to the
Orange County landfill for disposal. The clean-up
efforts have been completed. There may be minor
clean-up efforts remaining; however, these are
addressed on a case-by-case basis.
F. Orange Congregations in Mission (OCIM)
Hours after the tornado struck the town, OCIM acted
as a recipient for food and clothing for the
tornado relief effort.
Before an organized committee (the Unmet Needs
Committee) was formed, OCIM distributed food,
clothing, and volunteers to Fairview Baptist
Church. The executive director, Rev. Sharon
Freeland, met several times with the American Red
Cross officials to discuss ways in which to serve
more tornado victims at the shelter. After an
organized effort was in place, OCIM was designated
as the food distributor, and a source of funds. In
addition, several meetings of clergy representing
OCIM' s 41 churches met to discuss policies and
procedures.
An OCIM volunteer, Judy Cox, was named as OCIM' s
representative at the Service Center. She served
as a social worker. A Tornado Relief Committee was
formed from members of the OCIM Board of Directors.
9
