1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No. ua C,
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: August 4, 1993
SUBJECT: Tornado Report
DEPARTMENT: Manager' s Office PUBLIC HEARING YES: NO: X
ATTACHMENT(S) : Orange County INFORMATION CONTACT:Albert Kittrell
Unmet Needs Committee Final Report Sharron Siler
TELEPHONE NUMBER-
Hillsborough - 732-8181
Chapel Hill - 968-4501
Mebane - 227-2031
Durham - 688-7331
PURPOSE: To provide an overview of the various human service
activities that were coordinated and implemented in response
to the November 1992 tornado that struck Hillsborough.
BACKGROUND: On November 23, 1992 a tornado struck Hillsborough. As a
result of this phenomenon, there were two fatalities, 14
reported injuries, and structural damages estimated at
$1,953,000.
In an effort to provide the necessary assistance to those
persons affected by the tornado, the Manager' s Office
established an "Unmet Needs Committee" . This committee was
comprised of representatives from various public and private
organizations, churches, and individual volunteers. They were
responsible for the overall coordination of relief efforts--
both immediate and long-term. The coordination of these
efforts was imperative in order to ensure that there was no
duplication of service, as well as ensuring that all persons
affected by the tornado were contacted and their respective
needs were identified and addressed.
The committee routinely met for several months following
the disaster to assess the recovery process and relief
efforts. This report summarizes their activities and
assessment of the process.
RECOMMENDATION(S) : The Manager recommends that the Board receive this
report as information.
