ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: June 12, 2007 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item Noy ~` <br />SUBJECT: Resolution Requesting that the Budget for the State of North Carolina Be <br />Approved by July 1, 2007 <br />DEPARTMENT: BOCC <br />PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Resolution <br />Resolution from Martin County <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Donna Baker, Clerk to the <br />Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />(919) 245-2130 <br />PURPOSE: To consider a resolution requesting that the budget for the State of North Carolina <br />be approved by July 1, 2007. <br />BACKGROUND: North Carolina General Statute 159-8(b) requires counties to adopt a <br />balanced budget ordinance each year by July 1. There are still numerous bills in the General <br />Assembly that, if passed, will affect county budgets significantly. <br />Decisions on Medicaid relief will have an impact on whether counties will need to modify the tax <br />rate or reduce programs and services currently offered by the county. <br />Numerous counties in North Carolina are sending similar resolutions to the Governor and the <br />General Assembly requesting an approved State budget by July 1, 2007. <br />Copies of the resolution will be transmitted to North Carolina Governor Mike Easley, members <br />of the General Assembly representing Orange County, the North Carolina General Assembly <br />leadership, and the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached <br />resolution requesting that the North Carolina General Assembly and the Governor have the <br />State's budget approved by July 1, 2007 and authorize the Chair to sign on behalf of the Board <br />of Commissioners. <br />
