Prepare forward, acknowledgements, etc. <br /> During this phase, SHPO staff as well as <br /> Historic Preservation Commission provides <br /> intensive assistance in form of editing and <br /> suggestions. <br /> 3 . Upon completion of the manuscript and <br /> illustrative materials, Orange County can work <br /> directly with a graphic designer and/or the <br /> publisher. The manuscript is prepared in hard <br /> copy on paper and on computer disks, enabling <br /> most publishers to set type from disk. <br /> 4 . Following completion of the manuscript, the <br /> publication can be prepared with costs being <br /> covered by no-interest loans from the <br /> Federation of N.C. Historical Societies, pre- <br /> sale of books, donations from local patrons <br /> and/or county/municipal governments; and other <br /> methods. Counties normally produce 2 ,000-3,000 <br /> copies. <br /> 5. The SHPO staff strongly recommends that Todd <br /> Peck and Jody Carter be selected to prepare the <br /> manuscript for the following reasons: <br /> a. The principal investigator knows the <br /> county and its resources better than <br /> anyone; <br /> b. The principal investigator has a great <br /> deal at stake [professional reputation] to <br /> serve as an incentive to do a good job; <br /> c. Other consultants, including Kelly Lally, <br /> Ruth Little, and Scott Powers, are <br /> unavailable to prepare the manuscript; <br /> d. The best survey publications are those <br /> prepared by the principal investigators; <br /> e. The SHPO staff will be involved <br /> extensively in reviewing/editing drafts of <br /> the manuscript; and <br />
