Determine order of presentation of entries [e.g. , by <br /> township or other method] ; <br /> d. Expand and edit entries on properties as needed; <br /> e. Make additional photographs of properties as needed to <br /> correct for lighting problems or other conditions; <br /> f. Order publication size photographs; <br /> g. Locate and obtain prints of selected local documentary <br /> photographs; <br /> h. Obtain any HABS drawings needed; <br /> i. Decide upon/commission any floor plan drawings or farm <br /> complex drawings needed; <br /> j . Assemble illustrations/label as needed; <br /> k. Write captions for illustrations; and <br /> 1. Prepare forward, acknowledgements, etc. <br /> During this phase, SHPO staff as well as Historic <br /> Preservation Commission provides intensive assistance in <br /> form of editing and suggestions. <br /> 3 . Upon completion of the manuscript and illustrative <br /> materials, Orange County can work directly with a graphic <br /> designer and/or the publisher. The manuscript is prepared <br /> in hard copy on paper and on computer disks, enabling most <br /> publishers to set type from disk. <br /> 4 . Following completion of the manuscript, the publication can <br /> be prepared with costs being covered by no-interest loans <br /> from the Federation of N.C. Historical Societies, pre-sale <br /> of books, donations from local patrons and/or <br /> county/municipal governments; and other methods. Counties <br /> normally produce 2 , 000-3 , 000 copies. <br /> 5. The SHPO staff strongly recommends that Todd Peck and Jody <br /> Carter be selected to prepare the manuscript for the <br /> following reasons: <br /> a. The principal investigator knows the county and its <br /> resources better than anyone; <br /> b. The principal investigator has a great deal at stake <br /> [professional reputation] to serve as an incentive to <br /> do a good job; <br /> c. Other consultants, including Kelly Lally, Ruth Little, <br /> and Scott Powers, are unavailable to prepare the <br />
