1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No ViDC--G
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 29, 1993
SUBJECT: Contingency Appropriation for Tornado Expenses
DEPARTMENT Budget PUBLIC HEARING YES NO x
ATTACHMENT(S) INFORMATION CONTACT
Budget Amendment Sally Kost, ext 2151
TELEPHONE NUMBER
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Mebane 227-2031
Durham 688-7331
PURPOSE: To consider an appropriation from the contingency account to
cover expenses incurred during response to the November 1992 tornado.
BACKGROUND: A number of County departments incurred unusual and
unanticipated expenses during response to and clean up after the
November 1992 tornado in Hillsborough. At that time, staff indicated
that they would attempt to absorb these expenses within the existing
1992-93 departmental budgets, but that it might be necessary to seek an
end-of-the-year budget amendment to provide additional funds for some
departments. While most departments have been able to absorb the
unexpected costs in their budgets, the two departments with the largest
tornado expenses, the Sheriff' s Department and Emergency Management, do
not have sufficient flexibility in their 1992-93 budgets to do so.
Staff recommends that the Board consider appropriating $51,000 from
contingency - $41,000 for the Sheriff ' s Department and $10, 000 for
Emergency Management - to cover tornado related expenses.
RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends that the Board approve the
attached budget ordinance amendment approving $51,000 in contingency
funds for tornado expenses.
