3 <br /> FACT SHEET <br /> North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature <br /> Senate Bill 479 introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly on March 10, 1993, by <br /> Senator Beverly Perdue of New Bern calls for the establishment of a North Carolina Senior Tar <br /> Heel Legislature. <br /> Purpose of the Legislature: The Bill specifies that the Senior Tar Heel Legislature is <br /> to: <br /> • Provide information and education to senior citizens <br /> on the legislative process and matters being <br /> considered by the North Carolina General Assembly <br /> • Promote citizen involvement and advocacy <br /> concerning aging issues before the North Carolina <br /> General Assembly <br /> • Assess the legislative needs of older citizens by <br /> convening a forum modeled after the North <br /> Carolina General Assembly <br /> Meetings of the Legislature: Pending passage of the legislation, the first session of the <br /> Senior Tar Heel Legislature will be held in June of 1993. <br /> Subsequent sessions are to be held in March of every year <br /> beginning in 1994. The sessions are to be held in the State <br /> Capitol in Raleigh. The Division of Aging in the North <br /> Carolina Department of Human Resources is charged with <br /> the responsibility to organize and coordinate the <br /> Legislature. <br /> Selection of Delegates to the One delegate from each county will be elected to the Senior <br /> Legislature: Tar Heel Legislature for a two year term. Delegates must <br /> be age 60.or over. Local elections will be organized by <br /> the 18 Area Agencies on Aging in the state. The election <br /> of delegates and an alternate from each county will take <br /> place during the month of April. <br /> Reporting Requirements of the The Senior Tar Heel Legislature shall, at the conclusion of <br /> Legislature: each session, make a report of that session's proceedings <br /> and recommendations to the North Carolina General <br /> Assembly. <br /> For information on the Senior Tar Heel Legislature, contact the N.C.
