III. Identify and Analyze Potential Adverse Effects to Ground-Water Resource
Section III deals with the process required to identify and analyze existing and potential threats to the
quality and quantity of the ground-water resource. The analytical process involved in developing ground-
water vulnerability mapping, as outlined in step C, is the culmination of the initial investigative process.
Development of ground-water protection and management strategies will come via addressing problems and
conditions indicated by the vulnerability analyses.
A. Allocate resources as required to locate and map existing and future land use activities or
circumstances which are generally accepted as having potential to adversely affect ground-water quality
1. agricultural practices (agrichemical use, feedlots,
animal waste lagoons)
2. hazardous material storage and spill incidents
3. legal and illegal landfills and dumps
4. underground petroleum tanks and leakage incidents
5. recharge and wellhead protection area abuse
6. on-site waste treatment and disposal are-2s
B. Allocate resources as required to identify, locate and map existing and future land use activities or
circumstances which have potential to adversely affect ground-water quantity
1. well overuse or overdevelopment of aquifer capacity
2. impervious surface coverage of recharge areas
3. diversion of ground water for large-scale irrigation of crop lands, golf courses, etc.
C. Allocate resources as required to develop ground-water quality and quantity vulnerability analysis
1. develop ground-water quality vulnerability analysis mapping by overlaying previously developed
physical environment mapping with mapping of land use activity having potential ground-water
quality effects
2. develop ground-water quantity vulnerability analysis mapping by overlaying previously developed
physical environment mapping with mapping of land use activity having potential ground-water
quantity effects
3. investigate feasibility of using ground-water models for estimating effects of land use activities on
ground-water quality and quantity
