C r
I am sorry I am unable to attend this meeting and personally
voice my concerns regarding the proposed zoning change to allow
high density development in the Hogan Lake-Harmony Farms area
north of Calvander. I agree with all of the concerns raised by
others regarding school overcrowding, traffic congestion, and the
overall adverse environmental impacts such a project would have.
As an archaeologist, I am particularly worried about the
possibility of losing potentially important prehistoric and
historic archaeological sites in the project area. Although I'm
unaware of any known sites that might be impacted, the area has
never been systematically investigated, and given its long and
significant history, there is a high probability that such sites
exist.
I sincerely hope the idea of preserving much of the area as a
conservation sanctuary will be given serious consideration. If,
however, the rezoning request is approved, I strongly encourage
all parties--the developers, the town, and the county--to conduct
a detailed environmental assessment prior to moving forward with.
the project. And this assessment should certainly include an
appraisal of cultural, historical, and archaeological resources,
as well as natural environmental impacts.
or
H. Trawick Ward, *hi)
III
1
