MAY 31 '93 11:05 CARRBORO TOWN HALL. P.3
My name is Carolyn Miller and I am a resident
of Calvander . I , opposed to the rezoning of
Lake Hogan Farm because of the impact that , a 100%
increase in density will have on this community,
especially the Schools .
The Romans and all other landowners have every
right to develop their land. But we as citizens
have every right to contest a change in zoning
that will have an enormous impact on our schools .
It is obvious that the schools cannot handle
the high numbers of children moving into the
Chapel Hitl/Carrboro school district right now.
My children go to Seawel l Elementary School ,
which has a total capacity of 500 students . The
current enrollment is 613 , so they are 113
students over capacity this year , even with a new
building that was completed just last. fall .
We passed a school bond referendum lilst
November , which was controversial . It did pass ,
even though there were "vote NO for kids" signs
posted around. That bond allows us to build a new
high school and a middle school . There is no plan
for a new EL D41 TARY school .
The research triangle has the third highest
birth rate in this country. This is not so-called
"normal " growth. Chapel Hill/Carrboro school
enrollment projections are based on birth rate and
growth trends over the past few years . A January
' 92 report projected that there would be 6 , 617
students in the school system the following year .
The report UNIT . P ' •JECTED by 245 students in just
ONE year !
Anyone who drives down Homestead Road is aware
of the explosion of developments in the Seawell
school district , Wexford Subdivision is. under
construction with 95 houses planned.
