I have spoken at two meetings on this issue,
once at the Homestead Community Building at a gathering of "concerned" citizens and once
at the joint Carrboro-Orange Country public hearing. I am a Chapel Hill resident with
children attending Seawell Elementary School. I am also a close personal friend of the
Hogan family.
The issue I want to address with this letter is the impact of additional development on the
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System. I have served as an elected school governance
committee member at Seawell and as a Seawell parent volunteer to the last system-wide
school redistricting committee.
•
The request for rezoning Lake Hogan Farm is not the make-it or break-it issue for Seawell
or the school system as a whole. Some of the information that has circulated by those who
oppose this request lay the majority of the development burden on Seawell School. This is
simply not the case. Development is here and more development is on the way throughout
our community.
Our school administrators and board members, in collaboration with local governing boards
and the community at large, are responsible for meeting the educational needs of our
children. It is my view that we have extremely competent and dedicated educator-
administrators who are best able to face the growing demands of our increasing school age
population when they are able to plan adequately.
The development that is proposed with the rezoning request will take a minimum of eight to
ten years to build out. This type of planned development will facilitate rather than hinder
the work of those charged with designing and implementing educational facilities and
programs for our children.
RECEIVED NAY 2
5 293
