Chapter 2: The Plan
JLa 'dscgping,;aifd "-Srgnage
One of the recurrent themes throughout the Task Force's work was the need for landscaping and signage
improvements along 70 Corridor. The existing streetscape is bleak. "There are long stretches of shoulder
that are compacted red clay with no plantings. -The poor appearance of these areas leads to their misuse,
as parking and pull off areas. This also leads to ever - widening curb cuts at business entrances. The 70
Corridor could be greatly enhanced with a landscaping program that includes shoulder plantings.
The.Task Force also expressed concern that signage was much needed along the 70 Corridor. ,Two types
of signage were mentioned as being immediately necessary. First, the Task Force agreed that
wayfinding signage should be added. The wayfinding signage should be designed to be compatible with
wayfinding signage along South Churton and in the downtown area. The wayfinding signage should aid
in the ability for travelers and tourists to locate key destinations in Hillsborough.
The second type of signage identified by the Task Force.was "Welcome to Hillsborough" signage to be
located along US 70 at the town limits. The': Task Force agreed that this signage would help create a
more legible environment for newcomers while also deterring crime activities. "The signage should be
coordinated and complementary with signage along other main transportation routes and should be
accompanied by increased lighting.
These types of improvements can greatly boost the image of the area as well as the real and perceived crime
risks. Additional landscaping also serves to soften the edges and create a more natural flow between town and
county while enhancing human scale and adding color to the landscape.
42
US 70/ Cornelius Street Corridor.
