PP-i= - 1 3 9 <br /> FT L-15 <br /> -15 <br /> C5550-2/93 <br /> LIBRARY REFERENCE ASSISTANT <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs difficult para-professional work in providing general <br /> reference and readers' advisory services to the public; does related <br /> work as required. <br /> Work is performed under general supervision. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Responds to patrons ' questions in person, by phone or mail; <br /> Contacts agencies outside the library for information; <br /> Reviews and reorders reference materials; recommends new <br /> acquisitions for the collection; <br /> Maintain order in the reference collection including the regular <br /> reference shelves and adjunct areas; <br /> Responds to patrons ' requests for suggestions of reading material; <br /> Manages the McNaughton lease plan books; <br /> Prepares new books for circulation by processing paperwork and <br /> placing books on shelves; orders books; weeds collection; <br /> Performs general circulation duties at front desk; checks books in <br /> and out, answers questions, instructs patrons in the use of <br /> equipment; <br /> Performs miscellaneous duties such as registering voters, shelf <br /> reading, and assisting in planning adult programs; <br /> Maintains the library' s art gallery; recruits and schedules artists; <br /> assists artists with problems concerning exhibits; <br /> Promotes art exhibits; <br /> Develops, writes, and co-edits newsletter; <br /> Develops book displays and bulletin boards; <br /> Keeps boards updated with current information; <br /> Performs related tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> Thorough knowledge of general library operations; thorough knowledge <br /> of standard reference sources; thorough knowledge of library <br /> materials in many subject areas; thorough knowledge of the <br /> preparation of bibliographies; thorough knowledge of books and <br /> authors; ability to provide high quality reference assistance to the <br /> public; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; <br /> ability to conduct research and communicate results; ability to <br /> establish and maintain effective working relationships with the <br /> public and other employees. <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation <br /> from a four-year college or university with a degree in library <br /> science, english, or related field and at least two years experience <br /> working in a public library. <br />
