6 <br /> C5520-2/93 <br /> LIBRARY ASSISTANT III <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs difficult para-professional work in overseeing library <br /> operations during evenings and weekends; does related work as <br /> required. <br /> Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is <br /> exercised over subordinate personnel. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Provides general supervision and maintenance of reference, <br /> circulation, and clerical operations during evening and weekend <br /> hours; <br /> Checks books, movies, and periodicals in and out of the library; <br /> Answers directional and reference questions; <br /> Keeps circulation files and shelving carts in order; <br /> Instructs patrons in the use of library resources; <br /> Oversees patron registration and assistance; <br /> Searches and resolves clerical errors in circulation operations; <br /> Gives tours, collects fines, and registers voters; <br /> Participates in the hiring of student assistants; provides training <br /> and supervision; <br /> Prepares monthly work schedule and holds monthly staff meetings; <br /> Updates card catalog and vertical file; <br /> Performs related tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> Thorough knowledge of library operations; thorough knowledge of <br /> library materials in many subject areas; thorough knowledge of <br /> reference sources; thorough knowledge of audio-visual equipment; <br /> ability to work effectively with the public; ability to work <br /> independently; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; <br /> ability to coordinate the operation of the library; ability to <br /> maintain accurate files and records; ability to establish and <br /> maintain effective working relationships with the general public <br /> and other employees. <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation <br /> from a four-year college or university with a degree in library <br /> science, english, or related field, and at least two years <br /> experience working in a public library. <br />
