4 <br /> Attachment 2 <br /> C5500-2/93 <br /> LIBRARY ASSISTANT I <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs responsible skilled clerical work in the library which may <br /> include recovering overdue materials, collecting fines, renting <br /> audio-visual equipment, and processing new books; does related work <br /> as required. <br /> Work is performed under regular supervision. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Notifies patrons of overdue books and fines; pulls cards from <br /> circulation; searches shelves for returned books; files overdue <br /> cards; sends overdue notices to patrons; <br /> Processes new books; unloads orders and checks against packing slips <br /> and printouts; prepares catalog cards and files in appropriate card <br /> files; <br /> Maintains shelf list files; files cards in appropriate collections; <br /> Sends followup notices to patrons; works with Sheriff ' s department <br /> to collect items if necessary; <br /> Maintains the videocassette collection; searches video catalogs for <br /> additions to collection; writes orders and processes through <br /> purchasing; processes videos received by assigning stickers, decals, <br /> card pockets, etc; Maintains various files; <br /> Works at circulation desk providing assistance to patrons, answering <br /> questions, checking books in and out, etc. ; <br /> Sorts incoming mail; distributes mail to appropriate personnel; <br /> Maintains periodical collection; renews subscriptions; shelves <br /> current issues and files old issues; <br /> Staffs the weekly showing of films; orders films, promotes film, and <br /> shows; <br /> Maintains the audio-visual equipment; demonstrates use of equipment <br /> to patron; reserves equipment; rents equipment to patrons; prepares <br /> reports on equipment usage; <br /> Maintains meeting room schedule and prepares associated reports; <br /> Files patron registration cards; <br /> Performs related tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> General knowledge of library operations; general knowledge of books <br /> and authors; general knowledge of fines and collection process; <br /> general knowledge of audio-visual equipment; ability to maintain <br /> accurate records; ability to work effectively and tactfully with the <br /> public; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in <br /> writing; ability to work with automated systems. <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation <br /> from high school and at least one year of experience working in a <br /> public library. <br />
