P / 4'9313 <br /> C5590-2/93 <br /> LIBRARY DIRECTOR <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs difficult professional and difficult administrative work in <br /> planning and directing the operation of the county library; does <br /> related work as required. <br /> Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is <br /> exercised over subordinate personnel and volunteers. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Prepares and manages the library budget; <br /> Directs and supervises the work of subordinate personnel; <br /> Recommends and prepares work assignment and schedules; <br /> Prepares and submits long range plans; <br /> Secures funding through the State Library and other sources; <br /> Confers with library board, local officials, public and educational <br /> agencies on library developments and problems; <br /> Promotes library programs through talks to community and civic <br /> groups; <br /> Supervises the publicity and programming activities of the library; <br /> Supervises the book selection process and participates in the <br /> weeding of the collection; <br /> Prepares agendas for library board meetings and serves as staff <br /> advisor; <br /> Selects, disciplines, and terminates library personnel; <br /> Prepares a variety of reports on library operations; <br /> Performs related tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> Comprehensive knowledge of public library operations; comprehensive <br /> knowledge of library materials and the reading and informational <br /> needs of the public; comprehensive knowledge of budgeting and <br /> personnel supervision; ability to establish and maintain effective <br /> working relationships with the general public, elected officials, <br /> state and local staff, and local personnel; ability to plan and <br /> deliver an effective library program to the community. <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Masters <br /> degree in library science with at least six years experience as a <br /> library professional including two years supervisory and <br /> administrative experience. <br /> SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: <br /> Certification by the State of North Carolina as a professional <br /> librarian. <br />
