12 <br /> C5580-2/93 <br /> ASSISTANT TO LIBRARY DIRECTOR <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs difficult professional work in developing programs and <br /> supporting the library director; does related work as required. <br /> Work is performed under general supervision. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Plans, develops, implements, and reviews adult programs; manages <br /> program budget and handles publicity; carries out programs and <br /> writes final reports; <br /> Performs circulation duties by assisting patrons in checking out <br /> books, answering questions, answering the telephone, etc. ; <br /> Orders young adult materials; manages budget, reviews sources, <br /> selects titles, and orders; <br /> Serves as outreach librarian serving patrons unable to come into the <br /> library; selects materials and takes to homes; <br /> Supervises volunteer program; selects, trains, and assigns work to <br /> volunteers; <br /> Works with the director in preparing the annual budget; gathers <br /> figures and support information and writes narrative support; <br /> Participates in the recruitment process by reviewing applications <br /> and resumes, contacting applicants, and interviewing candidates; <br /> Trains new employees by filling out necessary documents and <br /> instructing in library services and materials; <br /> Composes written documents and correspondence such as grants, <br /> contracts, letters, memos, etc. ; <br /> Serves as liaison with Friends of the Library; <br /> Serves as library supervisor in the absence of the director; <br /> Performs related tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> Thorough knowledge of library procedures and operations; thorough <br /> knowledge of young adult and adult library materials; thorough <br /> knowledge of business practices and book keeping procedures; <br /> thorough knowledge of library media and materials; thorough <br /> knowledge of grant writing practices; ability to supervise <br /> subordinate personnel; ability to communicate effectively both <br /> orally and in writing; ability to work with volunteers and library <br /> friends. <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation <br /> from a four-year college or university with a degree in library <br /> science and at least three years of professional library experience. <br />
