10 <br /> C5560-2/93 <br /> BOOKMOBILE OPERATOR <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs difficult para-professional work in planning and executing <br /> the library's bookmobile outreach program in the county; does <br /> related work as required. <br /> Work is performed under general supervision. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Operates bookmobile on schedule route; charges books in and out; <br /> Maintains circulation files for each patron; <br /> Assists patrons in their book selections; handles special requests <br /> for patrons; <br /> Issues registration cards to new patrons; <br /> Determines bookmobile's scheduled stops; <br /> Maintains bookmobile's materials collection; selects books from new <br /> book shelves in the library to place on bookmobile; maintains order <br /> of books on shelves; rotates books from library to bookmobile; <br /> Cleans books and inspects for damage; sends damaged books out for <br /> repair or withdraws from collection; maintains statistics on <br /> bookmobile users; Maintains maintenance log for bookmobile and <br /> vehicle reports; Arranges for regular vehicle maintenance including <br /> oil, fluids, tire checks, etc. ; keeps log of mileage and gasoline <br /> used; Promotes bookmobile by maintaining good relations with all <br /> patrons; designs and distributes schedules; contacts media, <br /> community organizations, etc. on bookmobile activities; notifies <br /> patrons of overdue materials from bookmobile; reads book reviews; <br /> selects new titles to order for bookmobile; selects paperback titles <br /> for bookmobile; <br /> Submits requests to children's librarian for children's books; <br /> Performs general library duty in the library; <br /> Performs related tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> Thorough knowledge of books and authors; thorough knowledge of <br /> general library operations; thorough knowledge of the operation of a <br /> bookmobile; thorough knowledge of the geography of the county; <br /> ability to select appropriate materials for patrons of varying <br /> reading levels; ability to communicate effectively with the public; <br /> ability to conduct general research; ability to work independently <br /> and set own schedule; ability to establish and maintain effective <br /> working relationships with the public and other employees. <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation <br /> from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in <br /> library science, english, or related field and at least three years <br /> experience in public library work. <br /> SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: <br /> Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. <br />
