4 <br /> VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROPOSAL SUMMARY 21 JANUARY 1993 <br /> Lead Agency: First year - Town of Carrboro <br /> coordinated with Town of Chapel Hill <br /> Second year - Town of Carrboro <br /> coordinated with Town of Chapel Hill <br /> expanded to include Orange County <br /> Subcontractor: The ArtsCenter <br /> Scope and Purpose of Project: <br /> Reach out to low income, minority youth (ages 9 - 14) to provide <br /> an arts program aimed at violence prevention. The program will <br /> address four priority areas important to development of children <br /> in this age range. <br /> * Early intervention <br /> * After school/out of school arts activities for youth <br /> * Dropout prevention <br /> * Violence prevention <br /> The program will provide participants with positive after school <br /> activities specifically performing arts with an emphasis on <br /> violence prevention and building self-esteem. <br /> These activities will be focused in a performing arts workshop <br /> where the children will learn alternative methods of creative <br /> self-expression to displace destructive behavior. <br /> Methods: To be developed <br /> Project Structure: <br /> Based on a pilot study conducted during the summer of 1992, The <br /> ArtsCenter will provide a thirty-two ( 32) week program of classes <br /> and activities to include the following: <br /> Classes will begin with the introduction of the topic <br /> (violence) and how it affects daily life. <br /> Trained experts (drama, performance arts, theater <br /> technician, etc. ) will guide the participants through <br /> exercises to learn theater skills, enhance self-esteem and <br /> focus on alternatives to violence. <br /> With consulting advice from school social workers, guidance <br /> counselors or school psychologists, the participants will <br /> develop scenes to "act out" violent behaviors and learn how <br /> to channel these behaviors into creative outlets . <br /> If needed, individual counseling will be available for <br /> difficult problems or when needed by participants.
