housing units and golf course development. Approximately half of the
housing units were to be located in. a neo-traditional village.
Although no decision has been made as yet by the Board of Commissioners
regarding the project, the Historic Preservation Commission asked staff
to have the architectural historians conducting the Phase II inventory
to inspect the site. In addition, members of the Commission, assisted by
an intern, collected information regarding the history of the site and
reviewed archaeological information submitted as part of an
environmental assessment. The information contained in the report to the
Commission is being provided to the developer.
10. Student/Intern Projects - Each year, the Planning Department
employs up to four Interns, depending upon the number of hours per week
that each Intern works. Currently, one Intern is a doctoral candidate in
the Archaeology program at UNC working on the project described in #6
above. Another student, a Master's Degree candidate at Duke University,
is preparing a report concerning a proposed Historic Landmarks Program
for the County.
In addition to the Interns on staff, the Director of Preservation N.C.
teaches a historic preservation class at UNC's School of City & Regional
Planning. Each year, for the past two years, he has contacted the
Planning Department to determine if there are projects on which his
students might work. One student prepared a report for the Commission
concerning the mechanics of undertaking an archaeological survey of the
county.
Finally, an architect-in-training contacted the Planning Department,
volunteering to work up to 80 hours to satisfy a service requirement for
his A.I.A. examination. The architect-in-training, using a computer
print-out of structures built in Bingham Township before 1939 , surveyed
each site to identify which structures existed and those that did not.
The information proved useful in preparation of the Phase II inventory
grant application as well as the architectural historians eventually
selected to do the work.
11. Town of Hillsborough Reservoir Site - The Commission Chair
corresponded with the Town of Hillsborough in June, 1992, advising the
Town of the Phase II inventory. The results of the inventory were
offered for use by the Town in evaluating alternative reservoir sites in
the northwest portion of the county.
12.
