\1 <br /> AN ORDINANCE CREATING THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION OF <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> WHEREAS, the historic heritage of the State of North <br /> Carolina is one of our most valued and important assets; and <br /> WHEREAS, the North Carolina General Statutes authorize <br /> counties to safeguard the heritage of the County by <br /> preserving any historic sites therein that embody important <br /> elements of its cultural, social, economic, political, <br /> archaeological or architectural history and to promote the <br /> use and conservation of such site for the education, pleasure <br /> and enrichment of the 'residents of the County and State as a <br /> whole; and <br /> WHEREAS, the conservation of historic sites will stabilize <br /> and increase the values in their areas and strengthen the <br /> overall economy of the State; and <br /> WHEREAS, the County Commissioners of Orange County desire <br /> to safeguard the heritage of the county by preserving <br /> historic landmarks and historic districts; to enhance the <br /> environmental quality of neighborhoods; to establish and <br /> improve property values; and to foster economic development; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, the County Commissioners of Orange County do <br /> therefore desire to create a commission to be known as the <br /> Historic Preservation Commission of Orange County to perform <br /> the duties of regulating historic landmarks and historic <br /> districts pursuant to NCGS Chapter 160A, Article 19 , Part 3C <br /> and the provisions of this ordinance. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br /> OF ORANGE COUNTY AS FOLLOWS: <br /> Article 1. Historic Preservation Commission <br /> Section 1.1 Establishment <br /> Under the authority of Chapter 160A, Article 19 , Part <br /> 3C, of the North Carolina General Statutes, there is hereby <br /> established the Orange County Historic Preservation <br /> Commission, hereafter referred to as the "Commission" , <br /> consisting of seven (7 ) members . Members shall serve without <br /> compensation, but they may be reimbursed for incidental <br /> expenses incurred in connection with official duties . <br />
