1
ORANGE C O U N T Y
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: January 19, 1993
Agenda Abstract
Item #
SUBJECT: 1993 HISTORIC SURVEY & PLANNING GRANT APPLICATION
DEPARTMENT: Planning PUBLIC HEARING: Yes X No
ATTACHMENTS: INFORMATION CONTACT:
Application Planning Director X2592
PHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Mebane 227-2031
Durham 688-7331
Chapel Hill 967-9251
PURPOSE: To consider an application for 1993 Historic Survey
and Planning Grant Funds.
BACKGROUND: The N.C. Historic Preservation Office (HPO) has
announced the application period for 1993 Survey and
Planning Grant Funds. Eligible projects include
architectural and archaeological surveys,
preparation of nominations to the National Register
of Historic Places, and preservation plans.
This year, an estimated $130, 000 is available for
survey and planning grants to communities or
nonprofit organizations. Of the total amount,
$70, 000 is reserved for grants in communities that
participate in the Certified Local Government (CLG)
program. The remaining communities, including Orange
County, may apply for grants from the remaining
$60,000. Grant funds are awarded on a matching basis
with awards generally in the $5, 000-$15, 000 range.
Grant applications must be completed and submitted
to the HPO by January 31, 1993. Grant awards will be
announced in March, 1993, and projects must be
completed by July 31, 1994.
In January, 1992, Orange County applied for a
$17,000 grant to conduct an inventory of historic
sites and structures in the remaining unincorporated
portions of the county. The historic inventory of
Chapel Hill Township, Phase I of the countywide
inventory, was completed in July, 1992, following
receipt of a 1991 grant award.
