SECTION Hazardous Materials <br /> STANDARD <br /> ;t. <br /> OPERATING S.O.G. No 301.05 <br /> GUIDELINES Contaminated Protective <br /> SUBJECT Clothing <br /> I. PURPOSE. <br /> This standard establishes guidelines to be followed when uniforms, <br /> protective clothing, or items of personal protective equipment are <br /> contaminated by hazardous material. <br /> II. REFERENCES. <br /> A. North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission Department Occupational <br /> Safety and Health Program for Fire Departments and Rescue Squads, <br /> Subpart H — Hazardous Materials. 1910.120. <br /> B. Current edition of the National Fire Protection Association's 471, <br /> "Standard on Responding to Hazardous Materials Incidents". <br /> C. Current edition of the National Fire Protection Association's 1500, <br /> "Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program". <br /> D. Current edition of the National Fire Protection Association's 1993, <br /> "Standard on Support Function Protective garments For Hazardous <br /> Chemical Operations". <br /> III. OSHA REQUIREMENTS. <br /> A. The TRT shall establish and implement a decontamination procedure <br /> following emergency response for all hazardous materials response <br /> personnel in accordance with OSHA 1910.120(q) and North Carolina Fire <br /> and Rescue Commission's Occupational Safety and Health Standard <br /> 1910.156, Chapter 5-6.3, Support Function Protective Garments. <br /> IV. GENERAL. <br /> A. Personnel who enter the warm zone or the hot zone at a hazardous <br /> materials incident run the risk of becoming contaminated by the materials <br /> involved. <br /> B. Members must pass through the decontamination sector prior to being <br /> allowed to enter the cold zone. <br /> 1. At the entrance to the decon sector, the member should discard any <br /> hand tools and equipment at the edge of the corridor so that they can <br /> be decontaminated. <br /> 2. After the member has been rinsed off and decontaminated as much as <br /> possible, he/she shall proceed to the final area where a <br /> decontamination worker will assist him/her in removing his/her <br /> protective clothing. <br /> Page 1 of 2 <br />
