Policy 9: Policy on Updating HIPAA Policies, Procedures &Training <br /> North State Medical Transport <br /> Policy on Up HIPAA Policies,Procedures and Procedures and Training <br /> Purpose <br /> The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPAA") requires <br /> North State Medical Transport to ensure that its HIPAA policies, procedures and training <br /> materials are up to date and effective in safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity and <br /> availability of protected health information ("PHI"). This policy` ' <br /> adjust and update our policies and procedures accordingly, based on periodic reviews and <br /> evaluations of our existing practices and in light of new and changing risks to PHI. North State <br /> Medical Transport will also evaluate and consider new technologies and methodologies for <br /> securing PHI, as specified by guidance from the Secretary of Health and Human Services <br /> /"HHS"\. <br /> Scope <br /> This policy applies to all North State Medical Transport staff members who are <br /> responsible for evaluating and updating current HIPAA policies and procedures and providing <br /> the updates to staff members. The HIPAA Compliance Officer will have the overall <br /> responsibility for monitoring all new developments in patient privacy and security of PHI and <br /> will recommend updates to our HIPAA Compliance Program, as necessary. The HIPAA <br /> Compliance Officer should perform these duties in consultation with North State Medical <br /> Transport management and solicit the input of appropriate North State Medical Transport staff <br /> members, when appropriate. <br /> Procedure <br /> Maintaining Knowledge <br /> 1. The HIPAA Compliance Officer will strive to keep current with all changes in the law and <br /> regulations that address the privacy and security of PHI. <br /> 2. The HIPAA Compliance Officer will review journals and newsletters on the subject of <br /> HIPAA, and will sign up for appropriate list-serves to obtain current information. <br /> 3. The HIPAA Compliance Officer will monitor HIPAA websites, such as the site for the <br /> Office of Civil Rights,for new information on HIPAA compliance <br /> 4. The HIPAA Compliance Officer will participate in seminars and conferences on HIPAA as <br /> needed and as the budget allows <br />
