Attachment(s) : Irlformajorx Contact Jim Rolatty Issue Paper 732-8l8l ext. 342 shooe »m�bar: ` ' PURPOSE: To consider commenting on the draft environmental impact statement (EIS) prepared by the Division of Environmental Management for the proposed Cane Creek Reservoir. NEED: The Board had this item on its agenda of May 3rd; the Board asked that it be placed on the agenda of May 19th for consideration at that time. The Board also asked for information from the Town of Chapel Hill on requests it had made of the Div' of Environmental Management, Dept. of Natural Resources and Community Development, That information is included for your information but is not attached to the agenda. The comment period for this draft document ends June 1, 1982. Attached is a summary and critique of the report prepared by the Planning Department. Problems include: 1. No comparison of the cost to clean up of the Haw River to permit safe drinkable water. 2. No weighing of the problems of removing synthetic organic chemicals versus non-point source contributions. The former is a much more difficult contaminant to remove in terms of cost and technology. IMPACT: Comments will be used in preparing the final EIS. The final EIS will be part of the evidence considered when the Environmental Management Commission considers granting OWASA eminent domain power for acquiring land to build the Cane Creek reservoir. - RECOMMENDATION: As the Board decides.
