The situation involves Dean's Truck and Coach RnOair Service,
located on Murphy Schodi Road about one mile from the Friends School.
Dean's' is allegedly operating his repair service in violation of present
zoning regulations -- specifically, operating a commercial business in , ....
„ .
an area zoned non-commercial.
Dean's leases buses to the Carolina Friends School and accomplishes
all the repair on those buses -- a service Dean's has provided for about .
five years. It is important to note that finding such a service for
independent schools is almost impossible; indeed, the Deans are the only
. i one in the area. Finding such a service within a mile of the School is
_ therefore almost miraculous. . ...., ...-
.: .
I learned about the apparent zoning conflict from Gary Dean a short .
while ago and with his permission spoke with Mr. Eddie Kirk of the
Planning Department the next day. According to Gary Dean his business
might be shut down by Orange County in the very near future. Mr. Kirk
confirmed this fact, and advised me that Gary Dean could apply for rezoning --
the only option he had to remain in business at his present location. Mr.
Kirk gave me the appropriate forms for this rezoning request and I subse-
quently talked with Gary Dean. Re was surprised that he could make such
an application, for he had understood that there was no way that his land
might be rezoned under present land planning regulations. ,
He has subsequently applied for a rezoning consideration. Where's I
understand from Mr. Kirk that such a process is a long one, I have been
advised by Mr. Geoffrey Gledhill that it is important that the process get
underway. Further, Mr. Gledhill advised me that informing members of the
County Commissioners and members of the Planning Board at this stage would
be advisable.
„ .
. „
. .
