(RAM..1
O O
Public Hearing Statement page 2
At a meeting concerning this zoning request the other night, Mr.
Polatty stated that in his experience almost all requests for rezoning
are controversial -- that they tend to pit neighbor against neighbor. I
have known many of the "neighbors" concerned with this request for many
years, have met with those on both sides of this issue, and believe. that_ _
• they are all persons of great integrity. It appears to me that those - -
wishing that the rezoning be granted are basically only wishing to stay in
business, and, that those wishing that the rezoning be denied are not opposing
the presently existing businesses. Rather, they wish to protect the area
in question from additional commercial growth.
From this observation, it would appear that if the rezoning request
to Commercial III is denied, a decision by you, the Commissioner?, to
recommend the legal rezoning of all those presently operating small businesses
petitioning you would be a most pleasant solution. It best meets the necOs
and desires of all concerned.
In my experience in leading a small - but complex - School community,
whenever a solution to a conflict can be found that justly resolves con-
flicting positions by meeting the needs of all parties concerned, I feel
fortunate indeed. I believe that you the Commissioners have the option to
adopt such a solution in this situation by invoking certain alternative-
provisions presently contained in the Zoning Ordinance. I would submit that
if - and only if - you do so, you are both affirming the soundness of the
• new Zoning Ordinance as well as strongly promoting the health, safety,
general welfare and harmony of the County and its residents.
Thank you.
Donald A. Wells
4.
- "- -
