,..00786
. _ .
Members of the Planning Board
County Commissioners
I am speaking to you tonight as a resident of Bingham Township and as a
citizen of Orange County rd than an as a member of the Planning Board. My
_
reasons for speaking at this time are several-fold but result mainly from the
importance of this proposal and the necessity to have certain items entered into
the public record. I am opposed to the Midway Airport proposal for the following
reasons:
1. First of all, the site chosen for Midway Airport/Airpark is not a good
one. A major transportation facility such as an airport should be within easy
reach of the three major population districts in and around Orange County; these
being Durham, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. The current proposed site is accessible
only to Chapel Hill by a major collector, Its access to Hillsborough and Durham
-
would be-round about and there is no major north-south highway connecting the
proposed airpark site to the northern parts of the county. Tucked away as it is
in the southwest part of the county, this location for an airport/airpark is a
poor one for pilots and flights originating in Hillsborough and Durham. If the
airport should prove a financial failure as a private enterprise and the county
assumed control, the county could do little better with this airpark in its isolated
topographical position. Much better location sites would be along the 1-85
corridor, readily accessible to Hillsborough and Durham. Furthermore, the 1-40
link between Chapel Hill and 1-85 would make central Orange county an ideal
location. It should be pointed out that this is not the only suitable airport site
in the county, The Planning Department in little more than two months has already
located 60 sites with suitability similar to that of the proposed location for
Midway airport.
. .
