00751
...
—
. ; t..
r 2 - 1
1
The FAA can evaluate proposed construction in the vicinity of airports
to determine if structures would be a hazard to air navigation.
However, we cannot prevent the construction of any objects. Airpart
environs can only be protected through such means as local ordinances
and acquisition of property rights. '
. .
Federal AviatiOn Regulations, Part 77, defines certain imaginary
: - -
surfaces around runways which should be maintaincd clear of obstructians.
Of prime importance, the runway approaches should have a 20:1 approach
surface that is clear of all obstructions. The ends of the runway
should be a minimum of 500 feet from nearby roads, so that a minimum .:
clearance of 15 feet may be obtained between the roadway surface ■
and the 20:1 approach surface to the runway. In addition, the center-
line of the runway should be located at least 250 feet from nearby
roads, so that a minimum clearance of 15 feet may be obtained between
the road surface and a 7:1 transitional surface for the runway.
If the roadway elevation is higher than the runway elevation, these
minimum distances should be increased to provide the 15 foot vertical
clearance above the roadway surface. These clearances should be
increased to 17 feet for interstate highways.
A general ordinance of the State of North Carolina provides that
certain airport construction or alterations require a written peLwit
prior to coeltruction. The permit may be obtained from the North
Carolina Department of Transportation, Division of Aviation.
• ..._ ..
Should you have any questions concerning the above action or desire
technical assistance in airport matters, our advisory service is
available to you.
Sincerely,
original signed
GEORGE L.
