00748
31)
TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL
306 NORTH COLUMBIA STREET
CHAPEL HILL,NORTH CAROLINA 27511
orrice or Mr MAYOR
Telephone (919) 929 1121
January 12, 1981
Mr. Richard Whitted, Chair
Orange County Board of Commissioners
106 E. Margaret Lane,
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Commissioner Whitted:
Council and I wish to thank the Board of Commissioners for giving us an
opportunity to review the proposed Midway Airport and Airpark. This courtesy
review item was on our January 11 meeting agenda and was discussed that
evening,
On June 8, 1981 Council passed a resolution urging the Commissioners to
consider the need for an Orange County airport as part of the county's
zoning ordinance project. We still maintain unanimously the position
stated in that resolution. (A copy was forwarded to Commissioner Barnes
in June and another is enclosed for your reference.) Our concern about
the closeness of Horace Williams Airport to schools and homes has not
diminished.
We realize that the proposed Midway site is at least ten miles west of
Chapel Hill and not even adjacent to our planning district. While we
sincerely appreciate the chance to comment on the proposal, we also realize
that we may not be knowledgeable about potential problems with the project
or the site. However, we do wish to convey our interest in maintaining
fine water quality in both the University Lake and Cane Creeklotersheds,
and our confidence that the Commissioners value water quality very highly
during all stages of review.
Again, thank you for allowing us to comment. If we may be of any assistance,
please do not hesitate to ask.
to, HE GOV G BOARD
j0(
Jo; ifh L. Massif
-yor
cc: Council Members
Ronald A. Secrist, Interim Town Manager
